Kuali Student Plans "Founder's Release" of Curriculum Management on April 30

The Kuali Student Program (KS) will be releasing an initial version of the Curriculum Management (CM) module on April 30, 2010. The purpose of this “Founder’s Release” is to enable a few of the project’s investing partners to gain direct implementation and configuration experience with the module, leading to the first public software release later this year.

The Founder’s Release comprises all of the business functionality and SOA software infrastructure to make possible the on-line creation, modification, approval, and retirement of courses. All KS business functionality is enabled by the Kuali Rice infrastructure services including identity services (KIM), the enterprise workflow engine (KEW) and a new Business Rules Management System. These infrastructure services will combine to make this and future Kuali Student modules highly configurable to match local business requirements.

Public Release Set For September

In September 2010, Kuali Student will issue its first public software release of the Curriculum Management module. It will have all of the capabilities described above for both course and programs. Courses and programs are examples of Kuali Student learning units . A learning unit is any learning-related activity that needs to be tracked by an institution or a learner. Learning units range from very general (a degree program) to very specific (a class assignment). All credit and non-credit learning activities, whether traditional or non-traditional, are learning units. KS investing partners are committed to creating additional learning units and related services to support experiential learning and academic projects.

UC Berkeley To Be First Production Deployment

We are also pleased to announce that UC Berkeley is preparing to be the first production deployment of the Curriculum Management module based on the Founder’s Release. Berkeley will begin later this summer followed by expanded production in the fall. This represents an important milestone for Kuali Student as it will be the project’s first implementation. It also illustrates the modular release strategy of the project, as CM will be integrated into the existing Berkeley student system.
